  • Lady Murasaki Shikibu (978-1014): novelist, poet and lady-in-waiting in the Heian period, she is the author of the world's first novel Genji Monogatari.

  • Matsuo Basho (1644-1694): most famous poet of Edo period, the master of Haiku, most important works are Kai Oi or Kashima Kiko.

  • Mori Ogai (1862-1922): army surgeon, translator, novelist and poet, his most famous work Vita sexualis was banned due to its content because the story was dangerous to public morals.

  • Ryunosuke Akutagawa (1892-1927): Taisho period writer, he is called the father of the Japanese short story, the Akutagawa prize is named after him, his popular work is called Rashomon.

  • Edogawa Ranpo (1894-1965): he played a role in the developement of Japanese mystery and thriller fiction, one of the most popular novels is The Black Lizard.

  • Osamu Dazai (1909-1948): a very popular novelist, he was highly influenced by Fyodor Dostoevsky, his novels The Setting Sun and No Longer Human are considered modern/day classics.

  • Haruki Murakami (1949-onwards): his novels, essays and short stories are Japanese and international best-sellers, translated into 50 languages, the book After the quake was adaptated for the stage.
