History
Nara-period (before 794): no writing system, beginning of Chinese Kanji, earliest form of Kana, first literary works such as Kojiki or Nihon Shoki.
Heian (794-1185): golden era of art, poetry reached its peak, world's first novel Genji Monogatari, or other important writings including Kokin Wakashu and The Pillow Book.
Kamakura-Muromachi (1185-1603): many civil wars which led to developement of war tales, histories and stories related to warrior class, for example Heike Monogatari or Tsurezuregusa.
Edo-period (1603-1868): peaceful period, rise of the working and middle classes in Tokyo, popular dramas evolving inot Kabuki, debuting of many new genres such as famous Haiku.
Meiji, Taisho, Showa-period (1868-1945): opening Japan to the West, introduction of European literature, new intelectual themes, young writers face horizon of new ideas and artistic schools.
Postwar literature (1945-onwards): World war and Japan's defeat deeply influenced literature, authors wrote stories about disaffection or loss of purpose, writers struggled with moral issues.
